The Chequers Inn is a rare find - a village pub with a lively and popular bar trade and a thriving restaurant. Welcoming owners Ranka and Dritan Lani took over less than a year ago and have developed the 17th-Century building to great effect. With its polished flagstone floor, wooden beams and charming old brick walls, The Chequers retains a lovely traditional feel. There's a sun-trap terrace for alfresco dining and a dining room upstairs which is perfect for social functions.

The menu at The Chequers caters for all tastes and pockets - dishes are prepared in-house and incorporate local produce as much as possible. The main-course menu begins at around £12 and features a variety of dishes, from mixed seafood tagliolini pasta to sirloin steak. You'll also find an interesting choice of 20 wines served by the glass to accompany your meal. To begin, we chose gravadlax and scallops from the specials menu, followed by a whole lemon sole with samphire, and duck breast with Oriental noodles and vegetables. Our desserts were a creme brulée with rhubarb, and pannacotta with berries (and we couldn't resist sharing some homemade organic ice cream). The staff serving us were as professional as they were friendly. Sitting back with a glass (or two) of wine for me and a pint of Black Sheep bitter for my dining companion, we agreed that there was no doubt - we would be returning soon
