Conveniently situated on Wendover High Street, close to the distinctive clock tower, this 16th century coaching inn, set in the heart of the Chilterns, has been a haven for many travellers through the years. Nowadays, the inn is a popular stop off for both walkers and cyclists using the many routes around the Chilterns. It certainly deserves a visit to enjoy the excellent quality food provided by the award-winning chef.

The ample car park is approached from the main road through a timbered archway and gives one a chance to appreciate the rear of the interesting buildings. Entrance to the Cromwells Restaurant is through the busy and friendly bar area where snacks are available for those who don't want to linger.

We were lucky enough to have the time to enjoy an excellent, imaginative and freshly cooked meal in the comfortable non smoking restaurant. The menu has standard favourites but all prepared with a twist. For example, goat's cheese, a favourite of mine, was served on a wholemeal crouton with chilli jam. The wok-fried king prawns were delicious with the lemon julienne peppers and the expresso coffee créme brûlée was a winner.

As our visit happened to be on the weekly 'Wednesday Night is Curry Night', my companion was able to enjoy an excellent, home-cooked curry. Starters ranged from £4.45 to £5.95, main courses were priced from around £10.95 to £13.95 (steaks a little more expensive), and sweets at around £5.

The wine list was varied, with prices starting at £9.45 for the house red or white. Even pink champagne was included on the list. Sunday has the traditional Sunday Lunch option, with a variety of roasts with prices for one, two and three courses at £8.95, £12.95 and £16.95 respectively.

If you want to stay at the inn, the 24 ensuite rooms all offer differing décor and include a four poster suite. And there's a function room available for weddings and conferences.

Watch out for special promotions such as murder mystery weekends, race nights and other popular events. The friendly service and excellent quality food that we experienced will ensure we make another visit soon.
