Tucked away in the quaint Kentish village of Smarden is The Bell, a wonderful little 16th-Century pub with bags of character and plenty of charm. We visited for dinner and, ensconced in the oldest part of the restaurant below beautiful oak beams, we felt like we had truly stepped back in time. While we perused the menu, we wet our whistles with a couple of pints of local beer. After agonising over the menu, my companion chose a salad of sliced ripened tomatoes with fresh basil and buffalo mozzarella, drizzled with olive oil. I plumped for a bowl of homemade Stilton and broccoli soup, which arrived piping hot and served with fluffy bread rolls, baked on the premises that morning. Next, my friend enjoyed a tender chicken breast stuffed with baby spinach and chorizo, accompanied by an exquisite white wine, ginger and cream sauce, while I gave into the temptation of slow-roasted pork belly, served with fluffy mashed potatoes and roasted frilled courgettes and tomatoes.

Miraculously we both found room for dessert. I opted for the bread and butter pudding - light, buttery and served with fresh cream - while my companion enjoyed a velvety smooth and utterly decadent creme brulée. After enjoying a couple of coffees, we took out our diaries and planned our next visit to this delightful little pub.
