Having started his career as a trainee chef at the Norfolk Arms in 1988, Jon Lander has now returned as chef-patron with an AA rosette under his belt, and is proud to be launching an exciting new era for this grand old Georgian coaching inn. The Town Bar and the restaurant have recently been transformed, retaining the charming old-fashioned character but introducing fresh new decor. There is also a new lounge where you can relax with a traditional cream tea - or if the weather's fine, why not enjoy it outside in the suntrap that is the Courtyard Terrace? In the restaurant, Jon uses locally sourced ingredients to create an appealing dinner menu that varies with the seasons. In autumn you might savour warm ham hock and black pudding terrine followed by lamb rump with homemade faggot, carrot and rosemary purée, herb and garlic potato cake, and redcurrant jus. The inventive desserts are not to be missed and might include peanut butter panna cotta or delicate beetroot parfait. The wine list has also undergone a transformation, and the many enticing choices now include local sparkling wine from the Tinwood Estate just up the road. Also in the area are Arundel's castle and cathedral, the park for leisurely walks, and the river for cruises in the summer, making the Norfolk Arms a great base for a weekend break. Whether you're staying overnight or just popping in for tea, the friendly and accommodating staff are sure to make you feel welcome
