Chef and Brewer have created a group of traditional, upmarket establishments each with their own unique and individual hallmarks. The Didsbury is no exception. With a cool, smooth finish, it loses none of its charm and has a diverse appeal. Located on the edge of leafy Didsbury, it's ideal for those sultry summer evenings, with its atmospheric and popular beer garden.

The Didsbury itself combines traditional, charismatic oak wooded surroundings with a top quality menu and the friendly, smart service you would expect at any fine restaurant. After much deliberation, I settled for the pub's celebrated starter of hand-finished, oak-smoked salmon fishcake, (£4.25) with a zingy celeriac romoulade and horseradish mayonnaise, which creates a party on your taste buds. I also couldn't resist a taste of my companion's mushroom rarebit, (£3.95), grilled field mushrooms melted with rich creamy stilton and topped with rarebit, which was a luscious option by any standard.

For the main course I was torn between the very popular chicken breast filled with asparagus and wrapped with back bacon, but decided to indulge in the confit leg of Barbary duck, served with crushed new potatoes. (£10.95). This tender, succulent meat was topped off with a decadent apricot and ginger chutney. My partner tucked into a generous serving of the beef and Old Speckled Hen ale pie (£7.25) which was laden with a rich tasty gravy, filled with prime, tender meat and encased in a perfect pastry. Other temptations include the roasted peppers stuffed with courgettes and butternut squash or the grilled Scottish salmon délice with lime and coriander salsa.

The impressive wine selection was also a talking point of the evening. We started on the richly fruity cabernet sauvignon Wolfbass and ended our evening enjoying the deep, and full flavoured oak style rioja reserva.

The tempting dessert menu included baked vanilla cheesecake with lashings of red berry sauce, which was an intensely satisfying end to my meal, and my partner was delighted with his warm lemon parfait cake.

Whatever you choose from whichever Chef and Brewer establishment, you will find consistent quality throughout. The food is exceptional value for money. The generous portions are balanced with first rate dishes that are made from the finest ingredients and the friendly and helpful staff will make dining out at a Chef and Brewer establishment a fondly remembered experience.
