Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
In the market town of Cheadle, just outside Manchester, it’s a treat to discover Red Lion – a cosy, traditional pub with an open fireplace, ornate oak fittings and Victorian-style stained glass.
When we arrived, I quenched my thirst with a pint of the award-winning Unicorn, while my partner tried Dizzy Blonde by Robinsons. For starters, I was presented with delicious sautéed mushrooms served with melted Brie and sweet caramelised onions, while my partner sampled a traditional pork pie with mustard. We followed with two sublime glasses of Shiraz and the specials ofthe day: freshly grilled cod loin, complemented by a delicious roast tomato and olive ragu, sauté potatoes and baby spinach with shallot and garlic butter; and a 8oz Angus rump steak, topped with Robinsons Wizard ale and Welsh rarebit, served with chunky chips, grilled tomato and baby spinach. Having thoroughly relished our dishes so far, we couldn’t say no to dessert. My partner’s Bakewell tart arrived with custard and raspberry jus, while my chocolate fudge cake was served with a glossy, rich sauce and vanilla ice cream. I ate mine dreamily, only to discover that my partner had gobbled his down before I had a chance to taste his – we’ll have to return so I can sample it another time.
