If great home-style cooking and fresh ingredients are top of your list of priorities when dining out, then head for The Castle in suburban Wakefield. This neat and comfortable pub serves up everything from light snacks and tapas-style sharers to modern British classics and expertly cooked fish.

I started with the sautéed oyster and Portobello mushrooms in a masala cream sauce on toast, which was exceedingly tasty and beautifully presented. I eagerly moved on to the perfectly grilled rib-eye steak with superb chunky chips. My companion had huge, succulent garlic prawns followed by fishcakes and a side of the creamiest, cheesiest Dauphinoise potatoes. Desserts included the best chocolate brownie and ice cream I've ever tasted, and a delicate mango and passion fruit Pavlova.

On the drinks side, The Castle's bar stocks top cask ales from near and far, and a carefully chosen wine list includes such delights as the rich and balanced Argento Seleccion malbec. Two courses are just £12.99 on a Monday night, Cattle and Cork night is every Thursday, and on Sunday you can enjoy their popular roast platter. Whenever you visit, expect excellent service from young, local staff who are friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Well done to manager Neil Grant and chef Gavin Walker for creating a top-of-the-range pub-dining experience - it's no surprise The Castle won the 'Restaurant of the Year' award from the Wakefield Civic Society Dining Club.
