South Road in Waterloo is something of a gourmet paradise - a hub of friendly pubs and some of Liverpool's most interesting restaurants, including the wonderful Greek Taverna. This local gem has been a stalwart of the area for 20 years and offers a warm, elegant ambience, excellent service and top-notch Greek food served up in Olympian portions.

I started with a quintet of incredibly good dips, beautifully presented on lettuce leaves and accompanied by olives, fresh vegetable crudités and blankets of warm pitta bread. The dips included smoky tahini paste, a mound of creamy tzatziki, taramasalata so wonderfully fresh it smacked of the sea and the most delicious hummus I have ever tasted. This was followed by spanakopita - Greek filo parcels stuffed with spinach and a scattering of snow-white feta cheese.

I then had the opportunity to try the Greek Taverna's speciality, the kleftiko main course: lamb shank immersed in herby tomato sauce and so tender that the meat just fell from the bone. The delectable beef and shallot stifado with rich wine sauce is a must-try, as is the fresh, crisp Greek salad with chunky fries. Even when busy, the restaurant gives off a cosy, intimate aura - perfect for romantic dates and family get-togethers alike. Don't miss out.
