0.5 miles
Main Road, Kings Clipstone, Mansfield, NG21 9BT
Kings Clipstone has its very own excellent dining pub that nearby villages should be envious of. Jealousy aside, this place is fantastic with sumptuous furnishings, a contemporary but comfortable and homely design, an excellent beverage selection and most importantly, a menu to rave about.

Ornate antique mirrors, a baby grand piano, a grandfather clock and regal-looking armchairs are complemented by natural materials, plain light walls and some extremely atmospheric lighting. All design elements come together to create an altogether welcoming setting in which to indulge in classic pub fare, or something a little more exciting.

A two-course menu is available Monday to Friday from noon until 5pm and is a steal at just £9.95. Choose from a number of starters, which include a soup du jour and chicken liver paté served with toasted bread and butter. Succulent with a delightful crunch, the asparagus spears dressed with wild mushroom vinaigrette and garnished with Parmesan flakes get the tastebuds going in anticipation of your main course. The menu offers something for all tastes from traditional sausages of the day with butter mash and onion gravy, to the intriguing Mediterranean vegetable and feta cheese pie with seeded pastry, topped with pine nuts and served with crispy salad leaves and a jacket potato or fries. For an additional £3 you can cast your eye over the menu of daily hand-made desserts and pick something to finish things off in sweet style.

Throw the cookbook to the back of the cupboard on Sunday and take the stress out of the last day of the weekend by heading down to The Dog and Duck. The Sunday lunches here are renowned so get your table booked in advance and tuck into one, two or three courses of the best of British. Starters are classic with luxury prawn cocktail (£4.95), continental with baked Camembert for two people (£8.95), and international with Thai fishcakes (£4.85) and nachos with dips (£3.45).

Mains are as you would expect, with roast pork, beef and turkey (all £7.95), and several alternatives if roasts are not your thing. Whichever way you lean, all mains are served with seasonal vegetables, creamy mash, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and lots of lovely real gravy. Dessert is an indulgent affair with the dessert chef really wowing diners. Mille-feuille (£4.95), creamy rice pudding (£4.50) and baked chocolate pudding (£5.10) are just a taster of what's on offer every week.

The main menu, available the rest of the week brims with so much variety you won't know where to start. Try prawn and smoked salmon cocktail, goat's cheese atop red onion tart tatin or marinated pan-fried pigeon to start before moving onto the likes of steak and ale pie, juicy mussels, fillet steak, homemade lasagne or Mediterranean vegetable risotto to name but a few.

Monday night is quiz night with card gaming and questions aplenty; Tuesdays welcome resident pianist Geoff Bayliss; and Sunday is party night with a live jazz and swing band in the on-site barn. So don your dancing shoes, bring your game face and swot up on your general knowledge, but above all make sure you work up an appetite - the food is reason enough to visit
