The Scottish Steakhouse puts a premium twist on hearty, Northern dishes. Cow-print chairs and the open-plan, cowshed-style kitchen breathe personality into the decor, while a guide to beef cuts and how the kitchen will cook you the perfect steak is a fun and informative addition to the menu. However, the bill of fare at this steakhouse still features plenty of variety for non-meat eaters, including a fantastic selection of fish dishes and several vegetarian options. Appetisers are available as you browse the menu, and include an innovative take on pork scratchings - crunchy, bubbly and light, these delicious pork crispies are seasoned with paprika and served with apple sauce. But don't fill up on snacks, as the tempting selection of starters includes a delicate beef Carpaccio sprinkled with Parmesan, and a perfect Scotch egg with Stornoway black pudding and a runny yolk centre. If you're visiting for the steak, you'll be very impressed. Simply select your favourite cut of beef and you'll soon be tucking into a plate of perfectly cooked meat - my medium-rare sirloin had a flavoursome chargrilled outer layer and vibrant pink centre, and came served with a generous portion of golden hand-cut chips. Additionally, my blue cheese sauce side order was a rich and creamy bonus, without being overpowering. However, the spotlight isn't solely on steak. The head chef and Mrs Macdonald herself have curated a menu that includes some interesting options, from oatmeal-coated herrings to Scotch lamb chops. My partner ordered the latter, and found it full of Northern soul thanks to a comforting pea purée, homemade mint sauce, and, of course, mashed potatoes. For those who can't resist dessert, the build-your-own-sundae bar is a fun idea offering a range of toppings for every taste. On the dessert menu, the Scottish cranachan layered with boozy berries was the perfect way to round off our culinary tour of Scotland and the North. Situated just a stone's throw away from Piccadilly Station, Macdonald Manchester Hotel is the largest four-star hotel in the city. Whilst it may be best known for its accommodation, conference facilities and spa, Macdonald is making a name for itself among locals by offering sumptuous wining and dining too
