Oriental chic meets Northern Quarter charm in this relaxed but stylish little gem, which instantly transports you to South East Asia. Owners Andy and Norman are very passionate about Ning and, having sampled its delectable offerings, so am I.

The focus is on authentic and simple yet diverse Malaysian and Thai food. From a constantly evolving menu, the fantastic chicken satay with homemade spicy peanut sauce was succulent and moreish. The fishcakes with sweet chilli sauce competed squarely with perfectly textured calamari - both dishes were full of fresh flavours and washed down with a Beer Lao, a gorgeous honeyed beer. For our mains, we tried the beef rendang, which comprised tender cuts slowly simmering in coconut milk, lemongrass, galangal - a kind of citrusy ginger root - and chilli, and was complemented by aromatic coconut rice, infused with cloves and cinnamon. If meat isn't your thing, about 50 per cent of the menu can be made veggie or vegan. Our food was accompanied by a stunningly fruity, great-value Chilean viognier.

With a deal offering two courses from the à la carte menu of street-style appetisers, rich curries, Malaysian specialities, potent soups and spicy noodles for just £10, Ning has a versatile menu that should put this destination firmly on your hit list.

Ning also provides a call and collect takeaway and online home delivery service and, if you're feeling inspired, the owners run regular Malay cookery classes.
