Cornerhouse, 70 Oxford Street, Manchester, M1 5NH

Since a change in management last year, Cornerhouse Café Bar (located inside the Cornerhouse gallery and independent cinema) has been steadily transforming itself into something rather special. Now a family-owned business, the emphasis is on offering quality, homemade food, inspired by cuisine from all over the world. Many of the firm favourites are still on offer, including the ever-popular lamb burger, Sunday brunch and of course the homemade stone-baked pizzas. But in addition to the regular menu there is now an ever-changing deli-style selection of pastries, quiches, salads and breads, all freshly created in-house each and every day. A diverse range of seasonal ingredients are used, and every now and then you'll find dishes that have been specially created to complement some of the popular film festivals that take place in the cinema. The cakes have also had something of a makeover - new flavours are created daily by the dedicated pastry chefs, who work hard to ensure that a selection of desserts, including the greatest muffin I've ever eaten, are available to accompany some of the finest coffee you'll find in Manchester. In addition to all this, there are superb weekly general knowledge and monthly film quizzes held in the ground floor bar (where every team gets a prize), DJs performing every weekend, and a Reel Deal special offer which includes a film ticket and meal in the restaurant.
