There are many pubs in the city where you can enjoy bar meals cooked to a reasonable quality, but the B Lounge @ The Bridge is a cut above the competition. In an unpretentious pub atmosphere, it offers a choice of hearty, traditional meals prepared to a very high standard. For starters, I sampled the seafood cocktail of lobster, clams, smoked salmon and prawns (£4.95), generously layered and finished with light lemon and chive dressing. Delicious. The white bean bruschetta (£3.95) was also impressive - rich, earthy flavours with the tang of Parmesan. I'd heard great things about the steaks here and I wasn't disappointed. The 8oz rib-eye (£15.99) was tender and succulent, accompanied by hand-cut chips, stuffed tomatoes and homemade onion rings. Fish and chips (£9.95) is a meal that so many restaurants get wrong, but not here. The 'catch of the day' was pollock, lightly coated in crunchy beer batter and served with garden peas and a tangy lemon and tartare sauce. Absolutely note perfect. Sweets are selected from a board at £3.95 each. The sticky toffee pudding was wonderfully sweet and satisfying while the homemade bread and butter pudding was a revelation - light, creamy and topped with hot custard. For that special occasion, there's a large function suite with roof-top garden. Plans are afoot to extend The Bridge in the near future, but meanwhile, this little gem of a restaurant comes highly recommended.
