Sometimes after work you just want to go somewhere to chill out and wind down, and All Bar One on Manchester's King Street is just the place. With toned-down decor and calming wooden features, it is exactly what you need to banish the mid-week blues. A sense of humour is displayed in the sweet-bag lanterns on each table and the quirky cardboard perforated menus just begging to be investigated.

Sitting in the window, watching the world catch its bus, while you let your cares drift away into a plate of good food and a glass of wine is really quite liberating. With tables outside and in, you can sit and enjoy the sunshine with a cool beer before heading inside to sample the tasty world tapas menu. You can plump for Latin chorizo and chicken skewers, Eastern pork dim sum, Italiano grilled aubergine or Western red mullet, before pigging out on the main meals or 'big plates' as they are refreshingly called here. After sharing nachos and flat mushroom with goat's cheese, my companion and I sampled the delicious roasted mushroom and halloumi burger and grilled swordfish salad with side orders of fries and mouth-watering rosemary new potatoes.

The stickiest chocolate brownies in the world followed, complete with marshmallow and gooey chocolate sauce and not even the strawberries could make us feel healthy - especially with added clotted cream and Pimms syrup.

A cheeky glass of Laroche Chablis and a couple of espressos later and we were ready to face the world again, already making a note of the opening times and planning which tapas to have next time. Modern
