Good value is more keenly appreciated than ever, so little wonder this large, eclectically styled bar and restaurant is so popular. Manager Chris Hume has put together a compact but temptingly varied menu that offers the diner two courses for £6, available from noon until 8.30pm every weekday and from 5pm until 8.30pm on Sundays. An impressive traditional Sunday roast menu is on offer between noon and 4pm with two courses for £14. If evidence is needed of the popularity of Home, what about this - Chris had already catered for 300 diners the day I called in. For starters I chose cod fishcake, which was served with lemon, rocket and tartare sauce. Light and citrusy, it was an absolute delight. My companion chose grilled Bury black pudding, which had a deliciously dry and crumbly texture and was served with leeks and mild mustard sauce. The steaks also deserve a mention - the prime English sirloin was thick, tender and came with a fiery peppercorn sauce, French fries and salad. The slow-roast belly pork was also a triumph, the melt-in-the-mouth meat resplendent under a coating of wickedly succulent pork crackling. It was served with bubble and squeak - an inspired partnership. We sampled a couple of desserts, a steal at £3 each. The sticky toffee pudding and custard was satisfying, but pride of place went to the fresh apple pie, which contrasted layers of tart fruit with a sweet caramel topping and custard. How do they do it? I'm not sure, but at that recession-busting price, I'll be back
