The Courtyard Coffee House

0.5 miles
Rear of 92 King Street, Knutsford, WA16 6ED
Discreetly tucked away from Knutsford's bustling thoroughfare, the secluded walled garden of The Courtyard Coffee House is approached through a tiny alley. It's worth seeking out, as whilst the pretty town centre boasts many historic buildings, including the 17th-century Grade II listed cottage that the coffee house calls home, this popular dining establishment is a laid-back venue where you can sit back and relax. Inside, there's a feeling of stepping back in time, with an interior full of period features and vintage bone china, as well as cycling memorabilia and more than 30 antique Penny Farthings decorating the dining rooms (Knutsford's quirky Penny Farthing Museum is here too).

Under new ownership in 2015, The Courtyard Coffee House has a varied seasonal menu as well as daily specials that are all based on high-quality locally sourced ingredients. Popular specialities include Tatton Ale Welsh rarebit with an optional poached egg or crispy smoked bacon, and braised beef in Tatton Ale with creamed potatoes and honey-roasted vegetables. If you're in need of a great breakfast to set you up for the day, or an afternoon pick-me-up of tea and cake, there's a vast choice of options that are freshly prepared daily.

A real treat at The Courtyard is the choice of afternoon teas. We enjoyed the special occasion afternoon tea, which was completed by pristine presentation on Royal Albert fine china. Delicately prepared open sandwiches included Scottish smoked salmon and cream cheese, peppered roast beef with horseradish and creamed onions, honey-glazed ham with homemade fruit chutney, and Antrobus egg mayonnaise with watercress. The desserts, of course, took centre stage, with individual Victoria sponge cakes, potted portions of lemon posset and fresh raspberries, miniature almond tarts, and fruit scones with a plentiful supply of clotted cream and jam, finished off with fresh strawberries and a choice of Prosecco or fine teas.

Whether dining or just stopping by for a drink, customers can choose to sit in the main building, conservatory area, or al fresco in the leafy suntrap courtyard garden. Whatever the weather, though, The Courtyard's charming ambience, thoughtfully prepared food and friendly service ensure a relaxing retreat from the busy town centre, and the perfect spot for you to while away the hours
