This stylish establishment is the ideal haven in which to retreat after a busy day's shopping at Liverpool One. Once inside the Victorian Grade II listed gem, you'll leave the city bustle behind and be embraced by a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, thanks to its outstanding staff and the charm of the building itself. Liverpool One Bridewell was originally the city jailhouse and the old cells downstairs have been used to create trendy seating areas, perfect for indulging in one of a number of delicious cocktails or a local cask ale.

Upstairs in the dining area, bare brickwork is beautifully adorned with photographic art by local artist Paul McMullin, depicting this vibrant Capital of Culture. The appetising menu is uncomplicated and promises seasonal, locally sourced produce. Our starter dishes of spicy carrot soup and Lancashire fishcakes were beautifully presented, while mains of succulent chicken balti and Angus beef burger were home-cooked to perfection. You'll find firm British favourites such as panfried black pudding, scouse, curry and Bridewell burgers, too.

Friday night is jazz night. The live music was hugely enjoyable during our visit, playing at a conversation-friendly level and enhancing the current dining offer - a table for two with two courses and a bottle of wine for just £25. The next time I'm in Liverpool I know precisely where I'll be going to refuel and unwind. Follow Liverpool One Bridewell on Twitter - @lpool1bridewell.
