Nestled in the quaint village of Maunby and just minutes away from the A1 and A19, The Buck Inn has been at the heart of village life since the 1700s. In 2009, brothers Mark and Paul Stokes took over what had become an ailing business and set about transforming it into the archetypal Yorkshire country pub we see today. The decor inside is light and modern yet still incorporates the building's original features; the result is a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere, perfect for perusing the menu over a pint of hand-pulled ale from either the Copper Dragon Skipton Brewery, John Smith's or Bradford's Salamander Brewing Company.

The menu itself is worth taking your time over. Presenting a variety of quality, homemade Yorkshire fare, the choices on the main menu are complemented by a specials board, which always features fresh fish and meat dishes. We opted for a Yorkshire rarebit and duck and liver paté as our starters and these promptly set the standard for the rest of the meal; the quality could be tasted in each mouthful and there was certainly enough to satisfy even the healthiest of appetites. Our main courses were a triumph. My 'three pigs' consisted of a 10oz chargrilled pork cutlet that was as thick as a telephone book and cooked to perfection, served up with a pork sausage and two delightful black pudding fritters. Across the table the Barnsley chop - a traditional Yorkshire mainstay - went down a storm. Served with a selection of superb fresh vegetables, all of which Mark sources locally, piping hot homemade chips and a fabulous pot of steaming gravy, it was truly a feast fit for a king. The desserts also follow the homemade theme. I went for the deliciously rich and indulgent chocolate pot, while my companion plumped for a fluffy pavlova and assured me, between mouthfuls, that she couldn't have made it better herself. Quite a statement, given that she's quite the gourmet. So whether you are heading up or down the A1, or visiting one of North Yorkshire's many tourist attractions, a meal and a pint at The Buck Inn should be high on your 'to do' list.
