An inconspicuous sliding door off the main hall of The Smugglers Inn leads you down into the Cellar Bar in a secret-passage-like fashion. Here, we were greeted by Stacey, our lovely waitress for the evening. After ordering at the bar we went through to the restaurant, with its flagstone floor, beamed ceilings and cosy atmosphere.

To start, we enjoyed sharing the moreish Italian antipasti and the delicious Brie and cranberry tart with a walnut salad. It took us a while to choose our mains, but I savoured every bite of the steak and Otter ale pie with mashed potato, rich pan gravy and mixed vegetables. My companion devoured the Smugglers' own-recipe pork, apricot and Calvados sausages with mash, onion gravy and mixed vegetables, all served in a giant Yorkshire pudding. Finally, it was a challenge to pick just one dessert, but I plumped for the hot chocolate and orange brioche pudding with honeycomb ice cream, while my partner had no trouble choosing the chocolate and marshmallow cheesecake with bitter chocolate ice cream.

Located in a beautiful setting just off the promenade of Blue Anchor Beach, I now understand why The Smugglers is one of West Somerset's top restaurants; and after thoroughly enjoying my first visit, I am sure to return soon. Ope
