Bury Market

Bury Market

0.5 miles
1 Murray Road, Bury, BL9 0BJ

On full market days Bury Market has over 350 stalls and is everything a happy shopper could hope for. This diverse and eclectic market has three sections with different opening times, so to really experience it we recommend visiting on Wednesday, Friday or Saturday when it’s in full swing.

Bury Market was first set up in 1440, when Sir Thomas Pilkington was granted a Royal Charter by Henry VI. The market moved to its current site in 1971, after a fire destroyed the old market hall. Each stall is an independent business and their friendly owners create a really personal experience. The new market hall is not to be missed, housing around 60 indoor stalls, where visitors can find goods of all kinds. But for visitors looking to buy fresh produce straight from butchers or fishmongers, the place to be is the Fish & Meat Hall. This hall was purpose-built in 1999 at the centre of the market, to ensure that the produce would be kept in perfect condition. Here you will find variety, freshness, quality, and that personal touch often lacking in supermarkets. Visiting for the whole market experience?

The open market has around 300 stalls, so a trip to Bury Market makes for a terrific day out. There’s so much to see and the unique complex has such a wide variety of stalls that every visit is an experience. The outdoor market has light and airy aisles with clear coverings to protect against bad weather, so it’s a great place to visit year-round. The stalls also include a large number of cafés and hot food stalls, and with such a range of multicultural fare, there’s always something new to tempt your tastebuds.

The market’s size is especially remarkable in a relatively small town like Bury, and draws in a large number of visitors. The friendly traders, high-quality produce and sheer variety on offer has resulted in the market receiving consistently high TripAdvisor reviews, and winning numerous awards. However, the market wouldn’t enjoy its current success without the careful management to maintain the traditional atmosphere while embracing modern conveniences.
