It's not often that the word 'faultless' can truly be applied to a dining experience, but we found this to be very much the case at The Gate Inn. Its wonderful canalside setting, along with impeccable service and decor to match, make this place well worth a visit. I can't think of a better way to spend a sunny afternoon than by enjoying a refreshing drink on the inn's terrace while looking across Chesterfield Canal's glistening waters. If the weather isn't on your side, however, don't be disheartened - inside you'll find a lovely log fire to cosy up by during winter.

Chef Sam, who arrived at The Gate with an already strong reputation, has developed his passion for great cuisine here, using local produce to create innovative dishes. The home-smoked trout with horseradish terrine and nettle gel bestowed a fabulous balance of delicate flavours upon the palate. I opted for the wholesome fish pie to follow and my partner plumped for the juicy, flavoursome steak, although you'd be just as wise to select the pheasant, venison haunch or perhaps the baked herb-crusted hake with celeriac and chicken cannelloni - intriguingly presented without a piece of pasta in sight. With a well-balanced wine selection and a hearty welcome to boot, head to The Gate for superb dining in a glorious location.
