On a busy Monday evening, it was a pleasure to visit The Maybush, a charming, warmly lit, country pub complete with lovely oak beams. On arrival, we were cheerfully welcomed by the enthusiastic chef and obliging landlord, who pride themselves on offering homemade food, made with the best locally sourced ingredients, at an affordable price. With such quality cuisine on offer, we couldn't wait for our meals to arrive.

To begin, my deep-fried creamy Brie wedges were perfectly complemented by a superb tangy onion marmalade, and I also helped myself to my partner's hot-and-spicy cheesy nachos, topped with chillies, lemon guacamole and cooling sour cream, as there were more than enough to share. My main course of steak and ale pie with golden puff pastry was substantial and beautifully offset by creamy mash and a selection of vegetables. My fellow diner's chargrilled Cajun salmon, flavoured subtly with coriander and accompanied by crinkly chips and vegetables, was just heavenly. Our plum pudding dessert was created using fruit from a neighbour's tree, which was soaked in warm spice and served with a light fluffy sponge and thick cream. The bread and butter pudding was gently flavoured with nutmeg and finished off with a delightful orange twist and thick, creamy custard.

We'll definitely be back soon to sample the traditional Sunday roast (three courses for £9.95), or maybe even to grab some takeaway fish and chips, a curry or stone-baked pizza
