Bistro du Vin
Like its sister establishments, Hotel du Vin in Newcastle oozes understated glamour. Its historic home, within the one-time Tyne Tees Steam Ship Company residence on the banks of the Tyne, boasts river views and is a conveniently short walk from the centre of the city. Within this imposing Edwardian building you’ll find the occasional nod to its maritime past, through decorative touches such as porthole bathroom windows, ropes and memorabilia.
Bistro du Vin is equally chic, radiating its own unique atmosphere. Dark mahogany, vintage artwork, a warm palette and candlelight combine to create a setting made for the enjoyment of fine wine and fine food. Robust, authentic French cooking is served by knowledgeable staff, and there is even a sommelier on-hand at all times to ensure the perfect complement to your chosen dish. Shetland scallops with sauce vierge can be followed by a perfect steak frites, or a classic cassoulet of white beans, confit duck, smoked Toulouse sausage and pork belly. If you fancy continuing the seafood theme, a bowl of moules marinière – plump mussels steamed with white wine, cream, shallots and garlic – is a hearty and delicious option. There is also a plat du jour adding further choice and a feast for less – Saturday’s poached or grilled half lobster with garlic butter, salad and fat-cut chip mustn’t be missed. Finish with apple tarte Tatin with crème Normande and you’ll have experienced an authentic taste of the Continent in the heart of this exciting British city.
