Located in East Rainton, Angelo’s Trattoria is an authentic Italian restaurant with a modern twist and an award-winning chef. Sister restaurant to Angelo’s Ristorante in Sunderland, the Trattoria boasts the same excellent service and relaxed atmosphere, but with a slightly different menu. At the 2016 English Italian Awards, Angelo’s Trattoria was voted the best Italian restaurant with under 50 seats in the North East, and came runner up for Best Pasta in 2017. Head chef Aniello Russo and his team of Italian chefs pride themselves on creating some of the best homemade Italian food outside of Italy.
Start with the funghi piccanti: homemade toasted bread topped with mushrooms in a tomato, chilli and garlic sauce, or the sumptuous deep-fried Camembert with sliced pear, drizzled with honey and served with cranberry sauce. For a show-stopping main, try the chef’s special ravioli, filled with smoked scamorza cheese and aubergine and served with cherry tomato sauce, or the slow-cooked belly pork with caramelised vanilla apple and anise jus – perfect with a glass of red wine. Visit at lunchtime or for happy hour every Monday to Saturday and enjoy starters for £3.95 and any pizza or pasta dish from the ‘tradizionale’ section for only £5.95. This includes a gorgeous tagliatelle dish with salmon in a creamy sauce with onions and tomato, and the spicy Diavola pizza topped with tomato, mozzarella and spicy salami. If you’re still hungry, be sure to browse the daily selection of homemade desserts.
