Pink Lane, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 5HX
The Town Wall Public House & Eatery nestles on Pink Lane, just a stone's throw from Central Station. In Victorian times Pink Lane was a renowned hangout for ladies of the night but nowadays is a vibrant hub for Newcastle's creative industries and artisan types, making for a fantastically diverse mix of people. Neighboured by The Forth Hotel and The Jazz Café, The Town Wall forms a cornerstone to this city hub which is becoming known as the Bewick Quarter. Open from noon until late, with Fridays and Saturdays stretching to 1am, you can always find comfort within its walls.

The kitchen champions handmade, local and seasonal produce, resulting in freshly made, hearty food at decent prices. As a taster of what to expect, you could try the Scotch eggs, made from Northumbrian pork and local free-range eggs, or the pork pie and olives with a dollop of lovely piccalilli. Brunch is served all day - handy for those lazy weekends - while main-menu options are plentiful. Dishes such as buttermilk fried chicken sit alongside the likes of 28-day-aged Northumbrian skirt steak, beer-battered haddock and homemade sausage and mash.

The gourmet burger selection also offers great variety, featuring hand-moulded patties of local beef with herbs, alongside chargrilled chicken. Kids are well catered for too with a choice of well-priced, wholesome dishes. The pudding selection is to die for and most are made fresh on the premises. Perhaps try the burnt Northumbrian cream - allegedly the original creme brulée. With daily specials and constant menu updates, The Town Wall menu is always evolving, so even regulars will never grow bored of the choice.

Thirsty? Well, refreshing beverages are here in abundance - an ever-changing selection of ales nestles alongside world beers, crisp wines and a second-to-none spirit selection. Local brewers, Wylam, rub shoulders with Cromarty and Deuchars. The pub even has its own ale - the Toon Waal - that is brewed exclusively for them by Wylam and is certainly worth a try. The Town Wall is a pub for all seasons and times of the day - a gem in every sense
