Arriving for Sunday lunch at the Cheviot Restaurant at Ryton Park Country House Hotel, by the old village of Ryton, it's hard to believe you are only a five-minute drive from the bustle of Newcastle. We were immediately impressed by the immaculate surroundings, the restaurant exuding sophistication and elegance.

Manager Roselyn Proud has run the hotel for 22 years, taking genuine pleasure in looking after proceedings. As she flits from table to table chatting and joking with her delighted customers, it becomes apparent that many return here time and time again for Sunday lunch, and that some are old friends. A quick glance at the menu had us positively salivating and the delicious aromas wafting from the kitchen only increased our hunger. The starter menu is extensive and includes such delights as homemade tomato soup and smoked salmon. I decided to begin by savouring a fresh, thirst-quenching melon cocktail, whilst my husband made swift work of his delicious-looking paté. Next I opted for a dish of succulent sliced chicken and bacon served alongside a huge selection of seasonal vegetables. My husband polished off his roast lamb, which was cooked to perfection and so tender it literally melted in the mouth. Typical main courses at the Country Park include haddock with cheese sauce, lamb steak with red wine, chicken pepperpot and a vegetarian mushroom stroganoff, so there is always plenty to tempt your tastebuds, and this is just their Sunday lunch. Throughout the week there is an extensive menu compromising some ten starters and up to 20 main courses, as well as the restaurant's specials.

The staff are all trained in silver service and we were royally pampered throughout our meal. We rounded things off with an indulgent fruits of the forest cheesecake and a homemade apple pie and custard, and left feeling very content indeed.
