Situated in the shadow of Newcastle's iconic Tyne Bridge, fully licensed eatery The Old Siam prides itself on its delicious Thai dishes, which are prepared and served by people who care about both authenticity and quality. Staff treat each diner as a welcome guest who has popped into their home for a bite to eat, and will happily advise uninitiated and veteran diners alike. Seating around 65 people over two stylish floors, The Old Siam serves food that reflects the authentic flavours and textures of Thai cuisine. Just how well they achieve this was evident in the fi rst taste of my delicious starter of steamed mussels, served in a hot and spicy sour sauce. My dining companion's choice of satay barbecued chicken arrived authentically on bamboo skewers with a delectable peanut sauce. To follow, I plumped for a Thai classic. My Thai green curry was packed with delicate herbs and spices - green chillies, lime leaves, Thai herbs and coconut - and it tasted just like the green curry I tried while on holiday in Thailand. My companion went for another classic of pla kratiem prik Thai - deep-fried fish with a delicious garlic and pepper sauce. There were clean plates all round. The waiter suggested a Thai wine to accompany our meals, and his choice perfectly complemented the distinct flavours in our dishes. With food this good, booking ahead is highly recommended. Visit between noon and 3pm and you can take advantage of the great-value set lunch, with a two-course meal available for only £8.95
