Hotel Michelangelo's, Stella Road, Blaydon, Ryton, NE21 4LU
The Pieris' little corner of Italy, Hotel Michelangelo, is tucked into a bend between Blaydon and Ryton, within easy reach of the coast, Hadrian's Wall and Gateshead's Metrocentre. It's a great place to stay while discovering the North East, but also worth a visit just for the food.

To start, I indulged in a mountain of tender steaming mussels - brought to the table by Danieli, the Tuscan chef. Our waitress, unprompted, replaced my discardedshell dish as necessary - another hint of the considerate service offered here. My companion's hot Alpine cheese was crisp on the outside, melting inside, and well balanced in its tomato sauce. Resisting the tempting pizzas passing our table, and the lure of the steak menu, I chose the vegetable stroganoff with linguine - it was utterly delicious. The vegetables were fresh and al dente, complementing the subtly spiced creamy sauce perfectly. My companion chose a succulent slow-cooked lamb shank, expertly seasoned and fallfrom- the-bone tender, served with an overflowing bowl of chunky chips.

As well as its relaxed, romantic bistro, Hotel Michelangelo boasts a conference and entertainment suite and a spacious garden room; providing superb facilities for all. No one would blame you for booking into one of the rooms and staying for breakfast too, as the setting is lovely. The beauty of the flowers in the garden is rivalled only by the taste of the produce in the kitchen; the raspberries in my Eton Mess were especially flavoursome. It's little wonder the rabbits in the enclosed children's play area look so contented.
