Bruges is a little slice of Belgian life in the well-kept area of Jesmond. This restaurant could stand alone on the merit of its gorgeous and decadent hot waffle desserts, which are freshly made, replete with ice cream and bathed in maple syrup or white or dark chocolate. Utter heaven - but I'm getting ahead of myself.

For starters neither my partner or I could resist the vegetarian assiette de paté. A carnivore option was available too, but the addition of oozy Camembert made it a stand-out choice for us. For mains I picked the waterzooi - a traditional Flemish stew that came packed with chunky pieces of fish and perfectly cooked julienne vegetables, with just the right amount of bite, in a light cream sauce. My partner devoured the slow-roasted pork belly, which came with, among other things, a delightful apple fritter. The drinks selection here is also worth noting for its sheer range - the beer collection alone boasts a whole host of different varieties, from fruity Lindemans Kriek through to an intense, strong Rochefort 10.

Special events at Bruges include a steak night on Tuesdays, 'Waffle Wednesday' and, on Sundays, the kitchen team dish up a great roast lunch for £8.50. Whatever time or day, you must treat yourself to some Belgian indulgence.
Open: Tues-Sun 11.30am-11.30pm (last orders 9.30pm)
