46 Dean Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1PG
Towards the bottom of Dean Street sits the funky Hei Hei, a little restaurant that focuses on serving food that is not only faithful to the Chinese style of cooking, but that also demonstrates a real respect for the traditions of this ancient cuisine. Now in its fifth year, family-owned Hei Hei continues to be expertly run by Mark Yip - you only need read its rave reviews to understand why this place is still a firm favourite.

A warm welcome and a wave of mouth-watering aromas greet you as you enter - it's as though the vibrant atmosphere of a Chinese street market has been bottled and unleashed in the centre of Newcastle. Lively work parties mix happily with expat Chinese families, confirming not only Hei Hei's popularity, but also the authenticity of its food.

The menu breathes new life into the classics and offers plenty of variety, including vegetarian dishes such as delicious secret-recipe braised aubergines. From the second you tuck into a starter of moist pork belly with crispy skin and a seductive sesame kick you'll be hooked. Mains such as the exciting Xinjiang lamb skewers or traditional Singapore noodles should be complemented by something from the good range of wine and sake. Prices are reasonable, with happy hour and special lunch menus offering further value for money, and you can eat in or take your meal away. Needless to say, this fab city-centre eatery is here to stay.
