Da Mimmo's

Thanks to its superb staff, Da Mimmo's could well be the friendliest place to eat in the city. Here, Italian food can be enjoyed how it should be - with friends and loved ones, and a real sense of fun. Just around the corner from St James' Park (home of Newcastle United FC), Da Mimmo's looks just like a traditional, charming Italian café, but step inside and you'll find up-to-date decor, a fully stocked bar and a private function room that can be booked for up to 45 people. You'll also find an impressive range of classic and contemporary Italian food to please every palate and preference.

From a selection of hot and cold starters we chose Parma ham with melon and bruschetta made with homemade bread. My main course, salmon limon, was cooked to perfection; the fish fell apart at the touch of my fork, and chunky homemade chips made the ideal accompaniment. My companion plumped for pasta; delightfully, you can choose your preferred shape (tagliatelle, rigatoni or spaghetti) and accompanying sauce - the carbonara was thick, creamy and delicious. Tempted by the mouth-watering dessert menu, we shared profiteroles to finish.

The team at Da Mimmo's are excellent; never too busy to offer their recommendations or describe the daily specials. Alongside the main menu, the restaurant offers a set lunch menu from noon until 5pm every day, and one in the evening too, combining great food with great savings. We'll certainly be going back.
