Tucked beneath one of the North East's most iconic landmarks, The Bridge Tavern is an establishment that has all eventualities well and truly covered. Continuing a two-centuries-old tradition of serving proper ale, the current owners have installed a fully operational in-house microbrewery. Brewing in association with Wylam Brewery, The Bridge serves fabulous cask and keg ales that will satisfy even the most astute hop aficionado. But it's not just good beer on offer at this city-centre hangout.

Inside, it is comfortable and stylish, with an industrial-chic-meets-smart-townhouse vibe. The exposed pipe-work of the microbrewery and building blends seamlessly with traditional parquet flooring, brick walls and a library corner, to create a setting suitable for lunch and an afternoon curled up with a book, a night out catching up with friends over a few pints and a leisurely evening meal. The menu's contents stand up to the versatile nature of the building's design, with bar nibbles, light meals, sharing boards, hearty mains and traditional puds to choose from. 'Bar bait' offerings include the half-pint of shell-on prawns and fried pigs' ears with kimchee ketchup - all prepared in-house - while sharing planks combine a variety of decadent finger foods, such as the fish plank's potted crab, breaded monkfish cheeks, crispy mussels, pickled cucumbers and seaweed mayonnaise. Light meals, like the pigeon salad, roasted beetroot and black pudding, come in around the £6 mark and are perfect for a lunchtime snack or supper. Flat-iron steak with smoked bone-marrow butter and triple-cooked chips is an exemplary main, while desserts of steamed treacle sponge and chocolate mousse with cinder toffee will make you indecisive. Sunday lunch is a popular event at The Bridge, boasting a selection of quality meats served with all the trimmings for a more than reasonable £11.95.

Beneath the steel stanchions of the Tyne Bridge, you'll find The Bridge Tavern's roof terrace and alfresco area. A more recognisable setting to host your private event would be difficult to find - bespoke buffet menus are available on request
