Grey Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE1 6EE
Gazing at the renowned architecture of Newcastle's Grey Street from a window table in Blakes has, for many years, been a pleasure not to be missed. Thankfully current owner Harry Vaulkhard and his team understand the timeless appeal of this gem. Here you are welcome to sit and read a paper over a cup of coffee, indulge in a hearty breakfast or enjoy one of the well-filled sandwiches and a pint over a business meeting.

The pleasant and efficient service caters for those in a hurry, and personal preferences will be happily attended to. Alongside the regular favourites on the blackboards around the walls there is also a regularly changing main menu, from which my companion chose the flavourful Thai spiced soup. I plumped for the breakfast - a highlight was the tasty bacon, which had just the right amount of crispness.

We just could not resist the mouth-watering cakes on display, and chose a moreish Malteser slice and an apple and cranberry Victoria sponge, which was a feather-light twist on a classic. We look forward to a return visit in summer so we can enjoy Blakes' yummy food outside at a pavement table.
