Newcastle’s lively Quayside is home to Big Mussel, a glorious family-friendly restaurant serving the best of British seafood alongside flavoursome grilled steaks and Belgian beer. Upon entering the restaurant you’ll notice a decidedly European ambience, with a light and airy interior and blackboards that list the chef’s creative specials.

Overseeing the front of house is owner Alan Taylor, whose background as a seafood wholesaler allows him to select the finest seafood for head chef Dan to prepare. Expect innovative starters such as mackerel fillets with house pickle, fresh cucumber, dill salsa, horseradish dressing and crispy oyster, smoked haddock chowder, and mussels with a variety of sauces including the chef’s sauce of the week. The seafood platter is perfect for sharing and provides a great accompaniment to a nice pint of Duvel or Vedett. As well as the fantastic seafood, be sure to try the delicious rib-eye steak, or if you’re vegetarian plump for the penne Napoli or the grilled halloumi with mixed vegetable skewers and salsa verde. Gluten-free diners are also catered for – even the bread and beer have gluten-free counterparts.

Every Friday night there’s live music – it doesn’t get much better than a night at Big Mussel listening to live jazz music while sipping a Newcastle Gin and tonic, and tucking into a jumbo lobster that feeds four to six people. For regular offers, food events, and the latest menus, check out Big Mussel’s website.
