Amid Newcastle’s burgeoning market of Lebanese restaurants, Al Mandi really stands out from the crowd. Tastefully decorated and embellished with beautiful Moroccan lamps, the ambience here is relaxed and uplifting. The menu at Al Mandi offers something special for all tastes in its fusion of other Middle Eastern influences and by using unique spice blends.

The extensive menu offers the usual mezze and grilled meats but there are some signature dishes to watch out for, such as their namesake dishes mandi chicken and mandi lamb. Mandi is a traditional Yemeni dish where the meat and rice are smoked over charcoal, imparting an incredible depth of flavour. Determined to try something new, my partner and I began by sampling a lovely yoghurt and aubergine dip called aubergine belabn as well as opting for the more familiar hummus Beiruty, which was beautifully presented and incredibly tasty. Accompanied by smoky mandi rice, we enjoyed a tender charcoal-grilled poussin, succulent king prawns and delicious grilled sea bass with tahini sauce.

As is customary of Lebanese cuisine, portions here are very generous and many dishes are designed for sharing, so gather your family and friends and enjoy an authentic Middle Eastern feast.
