The Harbour View Hotel is set in an enviable position facing the sea in Seaham Harbour. Within easy travelling distance of Sunderland and Durham this place is everything you would expect from a seaside hotel. Recently refurbished, The Harbour View has a real family atmosphere and is tastefully decorated and furnished with a collection of sea-faring and fishing memorabilia. Decorative and discreet lighting adds to the warm and cosy ambience; continuing the family atmosphere there is a pool table and dartboard, as well as a band or singer on Sunday evenings.

On arrival my companion and I received a friendly welcome from Yvette, the manageress, and her staff. Yvette showed us to our table and left us to peruse the menu. The menu is extensive and varied, but as we were by the sea I decided to continue the theme by choosing the delicious traditional British fisherman's pie, with white fish, salmon and prawns in a creamy cheese sauce, topped with potatoes and cheese and served with generous helpings of chips and peas. This delicious fresh-tasting dish was an excellent contrast to my spicy starter of Mexican nachos topped with chilli, melted cheese, jalapenos and sour cream.

My companion chose a beautifully presented prawn cocktail - with no skimping on the prawns - served with a mixed salad; chicken curry was her choice of main course. We finished off with ice cream and coffees. To accompany our meal we chose a house red wine from the well-stocked bar. The main dishes varied from traditional homemade mince and dumplings, liver and onions and steaks, to fish and chips and indulgent surf and turf. With prices ranging from £6.95 to £15.99 there is something to suit everyone. As well as a specials board there is also a pensioners' special priced at £4.99 and a children's menu. If you're just grabbing a spot of lunch there is an excellent choice of sandwiches; try a Cajun chicken sandwich with Brie, bacon and mushrooms, or one of the delicious jacket baked potatoes, served with a selection of fillings.

If you're looking for a romantic getaway or a family break, The Harbour View provides accommodation in the form of single, double, twin and family rooms, all competitively priced. And with a beach opposite the hotel that's perfect for a pre-dinner stroll, it would seem The Harbour View is the place to be.
