Owners Pam Farrell and Yvonne Hamlett (chef profile page 51) know a good thing when they see it, and that is why they choose to retain The Peacock's long-standing reputation as a true, unadulterated English pub. It is with pride that they preserve that increasingly rare village pub atmosphere where locals mingle with visitors and nobody feels like a stranger. The friendly ambience is lubricated by an impressive collection of first-class beers and ciders, as well as a collection of Continental lagers and a superb wine list. With such a variety to choose from, The Peacock is a superb destination for any person and any occasion.

Nestled in the leafy Cotswold village of Oxhill, this historic 16th-Century pub, with wooden beams and stone-flagged floors, is a hustling, bustling hostelry where something always seems to be happening. Dog-walkers pop in for a mid-walk libation, farmers stop by for a working lunch and even the Warwickshire Hunt is sometimes seen calling in after a day in the fields. Live entertainment, beer festivals and charity events are also regular attractions that make The Peacock a fantastic place to be.

But one of the biggest enticements is the award-winning food provided throughout the day. Share a Continental platter of Parma ham, chorizo, salami, paté, chutney, olives and bread to get your appetite into gear. Then treat yourself to seafood casserole, fabulous fish pie or cod fillet wrapped in smoked bacon with roasted tomato and black olive sauce or, if it's meat you're after, try pork medallions served on black pudding with a wholegrain mustard and cream sauce or a braised Lighthorn lamb Henry with red wine and mint gravy.

Despite such deliciousness gracing the menu, Pam and Yvonne humbly insist that the success of their pub has just as much to do with the charismatic clientele as it does the food. Their modesty apparently reaps benefits - The Peacock was highly commended in the 2008 Coventry and Warwickshire Dining Pub Awards and has been awarded 'Best Regional Pub' and 'Best National Newcomer' in the Morning Advertiser's Great British Pub Awards. The Peacock is also due to be judged in a number of other competitions this year, so watch this space.
