As the name may suggest, The Queen's Head is a quintessentially British pub. It exudes traditionalism, as is apparent simply by admiring the stone-clad exterior, with its dark green signage and vibrant flowers overflowing from boxes sitting on the window ledges. Inside is equally homely, with deep-red carpets and drapes offset by dark wood. Settle yourself in one of the comfy chocolate-coloured leather chairs as you peruse the menu, which presents a fabulous selection of carefully conceived dishes, created from wonderful ingredients.

The informal bar menu offers a host of irresistible home-styled food, including starters such as prawn cocktail and nostalgia-inducing main courses like mince and dumplings. The prices are extraordinarily reasonable, with mains coming it at around £7. There is also a set menu for a spot of indulgence; to start, the poached rainbow trout with candied lemon zest, poached hen's egg and watercress salad is mouth-wateringly tempting, as is the game terrine for meat-lovers - a compact combination of seared pheasant breast, braised rabbit and field mushrooms, served with toasted bread and a refreshing grape chutney. These exquisite starters form the perfect prelude to some delicious mains. Of particular note is the braised shin of beef with red onion textures, horseradish mash and a red wine sauce. Vegetarians are offered a refreshing alternative with carrot and potato gratin with a carrot and orange purée, served with spring greens. Like the pub as a whole, the desserts are also given British interpretation - the apple and cinnamon rice pudding with caramelised apple pieces is a delicious twist on a classic and will banish any forlorn memories of school dinners. The Earl Grey creme brûlée is also a divine way to finish a truly satisfying meal.

If you are a fan of decent, well-executed food, served in traditional country pub surroundings (and let's be honest, who isn't?), you cannot go wrong with a visit to The Queen's Head.
