Overlooking the River Wear, Lumley Castle has been the jewel in the crown of the County Durham landscape for nearly 600 years and is certainly no ordinary hotel. Today the beautifully grand 14th-century castle provides a stunning backdrop to some of the region’s most opulent fine dining, as well as providing first-class accommodation, private dining experiences and luxurious afternoon teas.
The Black Knight Restaurant is elegantly decorated and remains true to its historic and traditional nature. However, the creative food offering is anything but old fashioned, boasting some truly outstanding modern British dishes, prepared using the finest and freshest ingredients. The à la carte menu, which is hand-crafted by the head chef and adapted seasonally, includes beautifully presented starters such as medallions of curried lamb shoulder with pickled cucumber, mango and banana salsa, and minted yoghurt. The crab mille-feuille in lemon and chive mayonnaise with pink grapefruit gel, chicory and a crispy quail’s egg is also an excellent choice. For a beautifully refined classic, try Lumley Castle’s signature dish of beef fillet stuffed with blue cheese, wrapped in Parma ham and served on a potato rosti with wild mushrooms and Port wine jus. There are also ample options available for vegetarians and those with gluten-free diets. As well as being the perfect place for fine dining and afternoon teas, Lumley Castle also holds banquets, which are famed for providing a unique experience of Elizabethan culture, entertainment and cuisine.
