We arrived at the beautiful Taj 51 Buckingham Gate hotel thrilled at the prospect of a themed afternoon tea rated by The Telegraph as the best in London. Delicate sandwiches, comforting scones, delectable cakes; what better way to spend an afternoon? Taking inspiration from the Mad Hatter’s tea party in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the team at Kona has created an immersive and unique dining experience you won’t forget. Located within the Taj 51 Buckingham Gate hotel, Kona is an elegant, restful space, perfectly suited to the noble tradition that makes an occasion of enjoying tea and cakes. It draws in tourists from all over the world, keen to try this English institution.
Once seated at our table adorned with playing cards, flowers, a colourful top hat and more, our friendly waiter listed the impressive range of loose-leaf teas. Our choices of classic English breakfast and Earl Grey with blue cornflowers were served in pretty teapots, and were expertly poured into delicate cups and saucers. The main event arrived and we were blown away by the assortment of finger sandwiches,
including classic cucumber on beetroot bread, coronation chicken, and tuna mayonnaise. Three types of delicious scones followed – plain, sultana and chocolate chip – along with inventive cakes such as Queen of Hearts mango tarts, Eat Me white chocolate mousse teacups and Pocket Watch macaroons. It was a delightful afternoon in Wonderland.
