If traditional French country fare with all the trimmings is what you desire, then Le P'tit Normand, tucked into an unassuming street in Southfields, could have been designed specifically with you in mind. The intimate French establishment offers entrecôte steak, magret de canard, and lapin farci, all served in traditional French surroundings; a touch of dark wood here, a flash of the Tricolore there. The prices are reasonable - the à la carte menu ranges from £5.60 to £7.95 for a starter and £13.95 to £16.95 for a main, while the set menu, chalked up in French on the blackboard, offers three courses for £21.50. After being greeted with a complimentary glass of Kir Royale by Krystyna, the formidable and charming French owner, I went à la carte, starting with the famed foie gras creme brulée. Served with a topping of burnt sugar, it was an original idea and absolutely delicious. My guest chose the snails, served traditionally in ramekins with garlic butter. For mains I plumped for the set-menu offering of lapin farci - rabbit cooked in a creamy mustard sauce, washed down with a glass of Vacqueyras from the Rhône wine-producing region in France. It was delicious, and a mouthful of my guest's slow-cooked lamb from the set menu only complemented the experience. For dessert we selected five cheeses from a groaning cheeseboard, followed by a slice of chef Ludovic Mesple's special gateau Basque - testament to his excellent training as a pastry chef. Le P'tit Normand delivers a delicious meal that transports you from London to the Rhône Valley. Bon appétit.
