The Earl Spencer may look like any other well-run pub but boy oh boy, once you've tasted their food, you will be well and truly impressed. Fish and meat is smoked in-house, fresh bread is baked twice daily, and many of the vegetables and herbs come from the pub garden. The menu is varied and changes every day. We started with half a pint of home-smoked Atlantic prawns, followed by melt-in-the-mouth home-smoked salmon, served with a beetroot, caper and watercress salad. We also tried homemade black pudding with celeriac, apple and Calvados sauce. Our mains were of an equally high standard; my companion had calf's liver with salsa verde on a bed of lentils, while I opted for a slow-roasted shoulder of lamb that was brought in the day before from a farm in Wales, served with mashed potatoes and topped with anchovy and rosemary sauce. Both dishes were hearty and well made, and the quality of the ingredients was most impressive. We finished our feast with a delightfully light baked vanilla cheesecake and a sticky ginger pudding in toffee sauce, served with vanilla ice cream. The whole evening was a pure delight; the food was cooked with passion and served with style and a great bottle of Burgundy - what more could you wish for?
