At A Toca, lucky diners are treated to a genuine taste of Portugal. Everything from the warm, welcoming atmosphere and bright interior to the traditional ingredients and authentic cuisine is resolutely Portuguese. The setting is lively and unpretentious, and the atmospheric background music is a nice touch.

It’s hard to imagine a better spot in London in which to enjoy a diverse range of exceptional Portuguese fare. The broad menu features fresh seafood, tapas-style dishes, meat straight from the grill, some fantastic house specialities and plenty of vegetarian options. Begin with the colourful salada de galinha with succulent chicken, or perhaps get your meal off to a flying start with sweet melon and flavoursome Parma ham. Follow this with the very generous grethado misto – a mixed grill including chorizo, pork belly, sirloin and chicken – served with fluffy rice, fresh mixed salad and crisp fries. The pesticos (tapas), too, are most enticing – why not sample the mussels cooked in signature tomato sauce, smoked chouriço (smoked Portuguese sausage) with pickles and olives, and sliced beef in rich red wine sauce? Signature main courses include the Bacalhau à brás, a delicious combination of salt cod, egg, onions and potato, and meltin- the-mouth Mirandesa-style sirloin with garlic and olive oil. The strong, salty flavours of these dishes are the perfect match for a bottle of house red from the well-priced wine list. I suggest you leave room for one of the irresistible desserts – the sweet and nutty honey and almond ice cream in particular is a real treat.

From Monday to Saturday, throughout the day, the restaurant doubles up as a laid-back Portuguese café serving breakfast, lunch and coffee until 3pm. In addition, the restaurant houses a private hire function room that can accommodate up to 75 guests and the team can provide speciality Portuguese set menus.

The huge variety and ample portions make this a top choice for peckish diners. With friendly staff, reasonably priced food and drink and exciting flavours, it’s no wonder A Toca has become a favourite dining destination for locals.
