Tucked away at the Wandsworth end of Upper Richmond Road in Putney and run by Pascal and Christine, L'Auberge is a cosy Gallic restaurant; equally as suitable for a quick midweek bite as it is for a special occasion, L'Auberge's menu offers familiar French classics with a unique and memorable twist.

Seated in this intimate yet spacious restaurant, we whetted our appetites with a cherry Kir Royal - one of 12 signature cocktails on offer - before moving on to a couple of glasses of the refreshingly dry house white (French of course). We dined à la carte, but a prix fixe menu is also available. Both menus are carefully designed to showcase seasonal produce and please carnivores and vegetarians alike. My starter - choux pastry buns filled with an apple and Roquefort Béchamel - was light and delicious, while a gorgeous foie gras was enhanced by an unexpectedly sweet-yet-sharp pineapple chutney. I moved on to tender, pink duck breast complemented by a rich Banyuls and fig sauce. The fish of the day - smoked haddock - was transported from the realms of childhood comfort to haute cuisine with the addition of a grown-up cream, dill and wholegrain mustard sauce. Dishes of seasonal vegetables added the final touches to these well-executed dishes. After hearing about Pascal's professional classic French training in all things sweet, we simply had to sample some of his tempting desserts. The homemade sorbets (mango, lime and raspberry) were sublime, while the gateau aux marrons was everything this French classic should be - nutty and light, with a hint of smoky whisky.

If you want to enjoy quality cuisine in your own home, some of L'Auberge's dishes and homemade signature preserves are available to take away. The restaurant can also be booked for private parties (between 12 and 40 people), with Pascal and Christine working with you to design your own menu.

At L'Auberge you can eat French for less than you might think - the two-course menu is £13.50 and the three-course menu just £17. L'Auberge is a little corner of France right here in the heart of London
