Indian and South Asian
Multi-award-winning The Empress draws diners from near and far. Established in 1993, this small, family-run restaurant is so popular, there is sometimes a queue out the door. Fortunately, they have an innovative way of keeping customers comfortable: the cosy pub next door welcomes in waiting diners for a drink.
The menu encompasses southern Asian cuisine, from Persia to Nepal. Those feeling overwhelmed by the wealth of choice can look to the friendly staff who are on-hand to offer suggestions, both food- and drink-wise. There are plenty of options for vegetarians, and the menu handily features allergen-related information. The quality of the ingredients is evident from the hand-picked, juicy duck that was part of my starter platter to the smoky prawns – flavoured by freshly ground and hand-mixed spices – that were grilled in the tandoor oven by the same chef who has been with The Empress since its doors first opened. Other delightful options include the house special grilled lamb bhuna and the tilapia jalfry, which is cooked in an iron wok. For dessert, the traditional seviyan kheer gets my personal recommendation, its refreshing lightness a great way to end a meal.
If you’d prefer to tuck into The Empress’ delightful cuisine at home, there is a home-delivery service available every day of the week.
