On picturesque West India Quay, you'll discover the trendy Rum & Sugar restaurant, bar and music venue. The historic, atmospheric Grade I listed building in which it is housed was once a rum and sugar warehouse, and has been carefully restored into a rather enchanting establishment.

The restaurant showcases locally sourced British produce, focusing on all-time classics as well as inventive creations. Of the starters, my guest and I went for the rillette of home-smoked mackerel and the poached hen's egg - simple but very well executed. Both dishes, with their thoughtful presentation and, above all else, vibrant and rich flavours, were absolutely delicious, and it was immediately obvious that the chef is quite the culinary artiste. I can recommend the main course of roast guinea fowl breast, Jerusalem artichoke, kale and almonds - the meat was gorgeously succulent. My guest's braised shin of beef was equally delightful and beautifully tender. As you can imagine,
our desserts followed suit in terms of quality. The selection of sweets is small but perfectly formed, and the cinnamon parfait with warm gingerbread and the clementine parfait were sensational.

As its name suggests, Rum & Sugar offers a vast selection of drinks, with a strong emphasis on rum and rum cocktails. Sampling a tipple or two is an absolute must - believe me, you will not be disappointed
