The Lotus is a magnificent floating restaurant which offers an authentic Oriental experience. It is conveniently situated on the waters of Inner Millwall Dock; but with its beautiful architecture and ornate decor, the restaurant wouldn't look out of place on Shanghai's Yangtze River. With capacity for 500 covers and a spacious openplan top deck, The Lotus specialises in East-meets-West weddings, with sumptuous banquets for the Chinese and specially tailored buffets for newly initiated guests. It's also just the place for a corporate event or a private party.

Inside, the Lotus' vibrant atmosphere combines the liveliness of Chinatown with the benefit of riverside tranquillity. The first thing you notice upon stepping inside is that the Lotus is very popular with the Chinese community; as you dine, you're just as likely to hear Mandarin dialect floating over from nearby tables as you are English. The service is fuss-free and polite, with waiters zipping past your table every few minutes to keep glasses full and plates piled.

The menus - à la carte, dim sum and a unique Chinese menu only recently translated into English - offer a colossal selection of dishes, ranging from the familiar to the truly exotic. To start, we tucked into a delectable feast of stuffed crab's claw with minced prawns, crispy deep-fried oysters, pork ribs in kim do sauce and crispy seaweed. The dim sum here is a speciality, expertly made by a team of dim sum chefs using an array of pastries and fillings; particularly impressive were the fried prawn dumplings with coriander and the indulgent yet delicately flavoured chive and scallop cheung fun (steamed rice pastries). The world is your oyster when it comes to mains - if you're a fan of aromatic duck with pancakes, try the aromatic lamb with similar trimmings for an unusual alternative. For something truly gourmet, the turbot or Dover sole fillets, stir-fried with asparagus and served in their own deep-fried skeleton basket, are spectacular to behold and to eat. Not just for those with adventurous tastes, the Lotus also does the more well-known classics - such as five-spice shredded pork and chicken with cashew nuts - fantastically well. Desserts aren't overlooked either, and our choice of sweet toffee-coated fruits provided a rich conclusion to a very impressive meal.

The Lotus offers expertly executed, authentic Chinese food which is great value for money - particularly at lunchtimes. Combining the eternal appeal of a floating restaurant with top-notch cuisine, a meal at the Lotus is one to remember.
