Canary Wharf's impressive skyscrapers, thriving businesses and beautifully landscaped spaces make for an impressive backdrop to stylish First Edition.

Although its smart exterior may fit in with the clean, corporate look of its neighbours, we found warmth, comfort and quirkiness inside. Quiet alcoves afford an air of cosiness in the spacious, open-plan restaurant, and allow for discreet and intimate dining. The decor is simple but fresh; a wash of white throughout gives an airy and elegant feel, while the wooden furnishings and rustic painted floorboards take the edge off with a lived-in look. Even the menus are chic and thoughtfully designed.

Unsurprisingly, with Billingsgate Market located nearby, the food offering is rich in fresh seafood such as crab, scallops and langoustine. For us, the crunchy coconut king prawns with sweet mango sauce was a stand-out option. Meat certainly doesn't take a back seat though; our second starter of a warm and crispy duck roll was succulent and packed with flavour. As the menu is seasonal, there were some enticing game dishes on offer during our autumnal visit. My partridge, stuffed with pork and sage, steeped in a rich Port jus and served with green beans and Dauphinoise potatoes, was incredible. Across the table, my partner's calamari proved to be a skilfully executed classic. As befits the restaurant's eminent location, the primarily modern European menu incorporates a wealth of global flavours. Tuna steak teriyaki, rabbit biryani and tofu cakes all offer something unique and feature carefully selected ingredients.

So, what to drink? Well, First Edition's very own connoisseur guided us helpfully through the extensive choice; each wine that was selected for us complemented the corresponding course beautifully. First Edition really has it all: the view; a great bar; an inclusive restaurant menu; great service and a fantastic location. It is a force to be reckoned with on the London dining scene
