The Bear Freehouse
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants

From the outside, The Bear appears to be just a normal pub, but step inside and soak up the chilled atmosphere, and it suddenly becomes apparent this pub is different from others. Friendly and attentive staff are on-hand to serve you and offer advice on menu choices. The menu is wonderfully fuss-free and devoid of pretentious accoutrements, allowing the ingredients to do the talking. I started with the wild garlic, leek and potato soup and my friend opted for the subtle yet flavoursome English asparagus and Hollandaise. We then enjoyed fish and chips with tartare sauce and pork belly and cheeks with sage and apple sauce; and what a triumph both dishes were. Afterwards, select from a range of desserts designed to suit everyone. We had the plum, rhubarb and almond crumble with cream and a chocolate, prune and Armagnac cake with vanilla ice cream. The only disappointing fact was that my stomach could not quite squeeze in the whole plateful, despite my best efforts.
