Almost midway between Blackfriars and Temple you’ll find Hilliard: a small, bustling café. The doors open at 7am, with a breakfast selection that includes bacon sandwiches, eggs prepared to order until 10am, artisanal toast with England Preserve jams, porridge, granola with yogurt, and a range of homemade pastries – the cinnamon buns get my personal recommendation. There is Hilliard’s fantastic blend of organic coffee from Liberty Coffee Co. and the lunch menu changes daily with soups, a daily hot dish, specials, salads, sandwiches and quiches, in addition to a range of sweet treats – think homemade cakes and biscuits, banana loaf and gooey brownies. Whole cakes are also available to order, and be sure to ask about business catering and private hire. Hilliards is licensed and provides a short wine list, with options served by the glass.
